Prime Minister Launches 5 DRDO Young Scientist Labs

The core focus of this article is the recent inauguration of five Young Scientist Laboratories by the Prime Minister under the aegis of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These laboratories, known as DRDO Young Scientist Laboratories (DYSLs), are situated in five major cities across India: Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. The existing establishment of 52 DRDO labs is supplemented by these new additions. This move is significant as each of these labs will be centred around crucial cutting-edge technology, which holds significance for the development of future defence systems.

The Objectives of DYSLs

The underlying aim of the establishment of DYSLs is to leverage the potential of the youth in India in the field of science and technology. Each laboratory will primarily focus on one key advanced technology—Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technologies, Cognitive Technologies, Asymmetric Technologies, and Smart Materials— of prime importance to the futuristic defence systems. By offering decision-making powers and challenging research opportunities, the objective is to empower the youth and stimulate scientific temperament across the nation.

Historical Background

The formation of these labs can be traced back to the setting up of the N Chandrasekaran Committee by the Ministry of Defence in 2018. Their mission was to study and explore the applications and potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military. This step marks a significant milestone in actualising the findings and recommendations of the committee.

Location and Focus of Each DYSL

* Bengaluru lab will focus on artificial intelligence.
* Mumbai lab will develop quantum technologies.
* Chennai lab will delve into cognitive technologies.
* Kolkata lab will concentrate on asymmetric technologies.
* Hyderabad lab will work with smart materials.

The Impact of DYSLs on India’s Defence Landscape

The establishment of these labs is likely to bring a transformative change in the defence landscape of India. By integrating advanced technologies into India’s defence mechanisms, it will ensure a strategic edge in defence capabilities. Furthermore, it will open up new avenues for youth to contribute to the nation’s defence preparedness while simultaneously driving innovation and growth in the country’s scientific research ecosystem.
