Punjab Assembly Election Postponed Due to Ravidas Anniversary

The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently deferred the Punjab Assembly election, shedding light on the significance of the Ravidassia community in Punjab. This postponement was triggered by concerns raised by the State Government and political parties that many devotees might miss voting due to their presence in Varanasi for the birth celebration of Guru Ravidas on 16th February. This auspicious event happens on Magh Purnima, a full moon day in the month of Magh as per the Hindu lunar calendar.

The Ravidassias: A Close Look

The Ravidassias form a significant part of the Dalit community, with nearly 12 lakh of them primarily residing in the Doaba region. The Dera Sachkhand Ballan, the principal dera with an enormous global following of around 20 lakh adherents, was initiated in the early 20th century by Baba Sant Pipal Das.

Transition from Sikhism to Ravidassia Religion

The Dera Sachkhand Ballan had a strong connection with Sikhism until 2010 when it announced its shift towards following the Ravidassia religion. This declaration happened on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti in Varanasi. Since 2010, the Dera has begun substituting the Guru Granth Sahib, with Amritbani, its own Granth composed of 200 hymns by Guru Ravidas in Ravidassia temples and gurdwaras.

Guru Ravidas: The Mystic Poet Saint

Guru Ravidas was a venerated poet saint and a spiritual luminary of the Bhakti Movement during the 15th and 16th centuries. He went on to establish the Ravidassia religion. He is believed to have been born into a cobbler’s family in Varanasi.

Philosophy and Contributions of Guru Ravidas

Guru Ravidas gained prominence due to his staunch belief in monotheism and his religious poems devoid of prejudice. He spent his entire life advocating for the eradication of the caste system, demonstrating open disdain for the concept of a Brahminical society. His devotional songs had a profound influence on the Bhakti Movement. Approximately 41 of his enriching poems found their way into the ‘Guru Granth Sahib’, the holy scripture of the Sikhs.

Significance of Guru Ravidas’ Birth Anniversary

The birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas holds immense importance for his followers. Celebrated on Magh Purnima as per the Hindu lunar calendar, devotees from all over the state flock to the memorial temple in Varanasi, rendering this day one of deep devotion and festivity.

Acknowledging the Impact of Ravidassia Community

The decision by the Election Commission of India to postpone the Punjab Assembly election underscores the significant influence of the Ravidassia community. The move shows an acknowledgement of their rights and a respect for their religious sentiments, ensuring that their participation in the democratic process is not compromised.
