The recent announcement of the Ramon Magsaysay Award 2021 has attracted global attention. This prestigious event is celebrated yearly in Manila, the capital of the Philippines on August 31st.
Background of The Ramon Magsaysay Award
The Ramon Magsaysay Award was established in 1957, and it is viewed as Asia’s leading prize and supreme honour. The award draws its name from Ramon Magsaysay, the third president of the Republic of the Philippines. The honour aims to recognise and honour the significant contributions made by individuals and organisations across Asia. Interestingly, these accolades do not discriminate based on race, creed, gender, or nationality.
The key factor that distinguishes these recognitions is the recipient’s attainment of distinct feats and their generous help towards others without any expectation of public acknowledgment. Initially, until 2009, awards were given in five categories – Government service, public service, community leadership, journalism, literature and creative communication arts, and peace and international understanding.
Post 2009 Amendments
However, following 2009, there have been notable changes to the selection process. Today, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation has added the field of Emergent Leadership to its annual selection of awardees.
Award Recognition
Every recipient receives a certificate, a medallion with an embossed image of Ramon Magsaysay, and a cash prize. The award is internationally recognised and holds its significance equivalent to the esteemed Nobel Prize in Asia.
Winners for 2021
This year’s winners include distinguished individuals from different walks of life. Dr. Firdausi Qadri from Bangladesh has been acknowledged as the Affordable Vaccine Champion. Muhammad Amjad Saqib from Pakistan is being celebrated as the Poverty Alleviation Visionary. Roberto Ballon, the Filipino fisher and community environmentalist, has also been recognised. Steven Muncy from America has been commended for his humanitarian work and refugee assistance. Lastly, Watchdoc, the Indonesian torchbearer for investigative journalism, is also among the esteemed winners.
These individuals have significantly contributed to their respective fields, and their recognition is indeed a testament to their persistent efforts and dedication. Their achievements not only inspire others but also pave the way for substantial change in the society.
The Ramon Magsaysay Award continues to hold its grand stature and serve as a milestone of achievement, inspiring many to contribute generously to the society while expecting no public recognition.
