The Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a premier Hyderabad-based lab in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has developed two automated contactless Ultraviolet C (UVC) sanitisation devices for curbing the spread of Covid-19 and other viruses. The devices, termed the Defence Research UltraViolet Sanitiser (DRUVS) and NOTESCLEAN, are designed to sanitize everyday items such as mobile phones, iPads, laptops, currency notes, cheque leafs, challans, passbooks, paper, envelopes, etc. This follows an earlier development by the DRDO of the UV Blaster, an ultraviolet disinfection tower for high infection-prone areas.
The Defence Research UltraViolet Sanitiser (DRUVS)
The DRUVS is an automated, contactless UVC sanitisation cabinet. Its design allows for the sanitisation of various commonly used items, from mobile phones to currency notes. The system is equipped with proximity sensor switches and drawer opening and closing mechanisms, which make its operation automatic and contactless—an essential feature for containing the spread of Covid-19 and other viruses.
The DRUVS cabinet offers 360-degree exposure to UVC radiation for the objects inside it. Once the sanitisation process is completed, the machine automatically enters sleep mode, further contributing to its user-friendly and safe characteristics.
NOTESCLEAN
The second of the RCI’s new developments, NOTESCLEAN, is an automated UVC currency sanitising device. The device uses a slot input method for inserting notes, which then pass through a series of UVC lamps for thorough disinfection. The NOTESCLEAN device is a significant time-saver, as manual disinfection of each currency note can be a time-consuming process.
About the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
The DRDO operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence. The organization was formed in 1958, combining the Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
The objective of the DRDO is to establish a world-class science and technology base in India. It aims to provide Indian Defence Services with an edge by equipping them with internationally competitive systems and solutions. This latest development in UVC sanitization technology is a testament to the organization’s ongoing pursuit of this goal.
