Red Sanders

Red Sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) is a valuable tree species that is endemic to the southern part of the Eastern Ghats in South India. The tree is known for its beautiful red-coloured wood and grows in the southern tropical dry deciduous forests of Andhra Pradesh. With an average height of 10 to 15 meters, this tree is considered as endangered by the IUCN and is protected under Schedule IV of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in India.

Illegal Trade of Red Sanders

A recent report by TRAFFIC and WWF-India released on 2nd February 2023 revealed that around 53.3% of the Red Sanders logs are shipped to China, making it the largest importer of illegal Red Sanders logs in the world.
