Article:

The 4th of July marks the death anniversary of one of India’s most influential spiritual leaders and intellectuals, Swami Vivekananda. Known for his significant contributions to spiritual philosophy and social reform, Vivekananda’s life and teachings continue to inspire millions around the globe.

Birth and Early Life

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12th January 1863 as Narendranath Datta. His birth anniversary is celebrated as National Youth Day in India every year. In 1893, at the request of Maharaja Ajit Singh of Khetri State, Narendranath adopted the monastic name ‘Vivekananda’.

Contributions to Philosophy and Education

Notably, Swami Vivekananda introduced Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the world. He was a proponent of ‘neo-Vedanta’, which is an interpretation of Hinduism through a Western lens, and he believed in the integration of spirituality with material progress.

Education was of paramount importance to Vivekananda. He placed great emphasis on character-building and man-making education, believing these to be key for national regeneration. His most famous public address took place at the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.

In his writings, specifically in the books Raja-yoga, Karma-yoga, Jnana-yoga, and Bhakti-yoga, Vivekananda outlined the four pathways to attain moksha, or liberation from worldly pleasure and attachment. Inspired by his vision and influence, freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose dubbed Vivekananda the “maker of modern India.”

Founding of Organisations

As the chief disciple of the 19th-century mystic Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda was instrumental in establishing the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897. This organization is devoted to value-based education, cultural enrichment, health services, women’s empowerment, youth and tribal welfare, and relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Additionally, in 1899, Vivekananda founded the Belur Math, which eventually became his final dwelling place. Located in West Bengal, the Belur Math serves as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission.

Death and Legacy

On 4th July 1902, Swami Vivekananda passed away at the Belur Math. His teachings and philosophy continue to inspire millions worldwide, and his work through the organizations he established carries on his legacy of promoting spiritual wisdom, social upliftment, and educational progress. The annual observance of his death anniversary serves as a reminder of his profound contributions and lasting influence.
