The recent review meeting of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Scheme (UBA) was conducted via video conferencing, bringing to light a number of vital points. From increasing the reach of UBA amongst Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to identifying core issues in rural villages, the agenda was wide-ranging.
Key Takeaways from the Meeting
The Union Education Minister emphasized a few significant areas during the meeting. Firstly, it is important to identify three to five core issues that are prevalent in all villages and some issues specific to local conditions for effective problem solving. Secondly, efforts should be extended to include more Higher Educational Institutions under the scheme. This will help a greater number of villages avail its benefits.
Furthermore, the role of UBA in sensitizing the school teachers regarding the National Education Policy, 2020 was underscored. A need for an interactive portal was also highlighted. This platform will enable different institutions to share their success stories and motivate each other.
Additionally, a state-wise study should be conducted and targets set regarding parameters such as improvement in literacy and healthcare under the UBA.
About Unnat Bharat Abhiyan
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship program initiated by the Ministry of Education in 2014. The scheme aims to connect Higher Education Institutions with at least five village communities. This connection helps these institutions leverage their knowledge base for the economic and social advancement of the villages.
The program covers two major domains for comprehensive development of villages – human development and material (economic) development. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has been appointed as the National Coordinating Institute for the UBA scheme.
Main Objectives of UBA
The main objectives of UBA include leveraging the expertise of faculty and students of HEIs in identifying and resolving development issues in rural areas. Unnat Bharat Abhiyan also encourages institutions to identify and select innovative technologies, enable their customization or devise methods for implementing innovation as required by the people. The scheme also allows HEIs to contribute to devising systems for smooth implementation of various government programs.
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0
The upgraded version of UBA, known as Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0, was launched in 2018. While UBA 1.0 or Phase-1 involved Participating Institutions being invited to be part of UBA, UBA 2.0 follows the Challenge Mode. Here, all Higher Education Institutions are encouraged to willingly adopt at least five villages. Presently, UBA 2.0 is the ongoing mode of the program.
Unnat Bharat Abhiyan serves as a bridge between Higher Educational Institutions and rural communities. By leveraging knowledge and resources, this scheme aims to enhance the socio-economic fabric of these communities. With education at its core, the UBA’s mission aligns with broader national developmental goals.
