SACRED Portal Opens for Seniors

The Indian government has launched an innovative initiative to assist senior citizens in re-entering the workforce. The SACRED (Senior Able Citizens for Re-Employment in Dignity) portal, which opened on October 1, is a dedicated platform aimed at providing job opportunities for the elderly population. This first-of-its-kind employment exchange portal, managed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, is designed to tap into the wealth of experience, skills, and expertise that senior citizens possess. The portal serves as a bridge between job providers and senior citizens, facilitating a space where the demand for seasoned professionals can be met with a supply of capable and willing senior members of society.

Objective of the SACRED Portal

The primary objective of the SACRED portal is to empower senior citizens by providing them with avenues to remain economically active and engaged in their later years. By doing so, the government acknowledges the valuable contributions that seniors can make to various sectors, despite their age. The portal aims to break stereotypes associated with aging and promote the concept of dignified re-employment for those who wish to continue contributing to the workforce.

How the Portal Functions

Job providers can easily navigate the SACRED portal to post their requirements. They can specify the nature of the tasks, the duration for which employment is needed, and the number of senior citizens they are looking to hire. This system allows for flexibility and tailoring of jobs to suit the capabilities and interests of senior applicants. On the other side, senior citizens can browse through available job listings and apply for positions that align with their skill sets and preferences.

Government Investment in the SACRED Portal

The Central Government has allocated a significant budget for the development and maintenance of the SACRED portal. A sum of Rs.10 crore has been earmarked for the initial development phase of the platform. Additionally, the government approved Rs.2 crore for its ongoing maintenance, ensuring the portal remains operational and efficient for users. To raise awareness and encourage participation, the government will spend another Rs.10 crore on publicizing the portal. This investment underscores the government’s commitment to integrating senior citizens back into the workforce and utilizing their potential to the fullest.

Benefits for Senior Citizens and Employers

The SACRED portal offers multiple benefits for both senior citizens and employers. For seniors, it provides an opportunity to stay active, maintain a sense of purpose, and earn income, which can be particularly important for those without sufficient retirement savings. It also helps combat social isolation by encouraging continued professional interactions.

For employers, the portal offers access to a pool of experienced and skilled candidates who can bring stability, mentorship, and a wealth of knowledge to their organizations. Employers can benefit from the reliability and dedication often associated with older employees, who may also provide a different perspective based on their extensive life and work experiences.

Future Prospects of the SACRED Portal

The introduction of the SACRED portal marks a significant step towards creating an inclusive society that values the contributions of senior citizens. As the platform gains traction, it is expected to pave the way for more policies and programs that support the employment of older adults. The government’s substantial financial backing indicates a long-term commitment to this cause, and the success of the SACRED portal could potentially inspire similar initiatives globally, addressing the broader challenge of an aging workforce.
