The Science Behind Tears Draining into the Nose
When a person cries, the lacrimal gland produces a tear fluid causing the white part of the eye and the inner eyelids to bulge. These tears then pass through a system of ducts in the conjunctival sac, reaching the lacrimal sac. From there, they are funneled into the nasal cavity through the lacrimal duct, which links the eyes to the nose. This process can sometimes result in a feeling of congestion or a blocked nose. However, a flap valve at the end of the lacrimal duct stops the tears from flowing back into the eyes.
