In a significant stride towards bolstering digital connectivity in the state, the Gujarat government has partnered with OneWeb India Communications Pvt Ltd to establish ‘satellite network portal sites’ in Mehsana district. This pioneering move will be the first of its kind in India and is expected to revolutionize internet access in remote areas, bridging the digital divide and empowering communities with affordable, secure, and high-speed connectivity.
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with OneWeb Company
The Gujarat government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with OneWeb Company, a renowned Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite company headquartered in London, England. The collaboration also involves the Department of Science and Technology (DST), demonstrating a concerted effort by the government to leverage advanced satellite technology for the benefit of its citizens.
Two Sites in Jotana Taluka, Mehsana District
The satellite network portal sites will be established at two locations in Jotana taluka of Mehsana district. The strategic selection of these sites aims to cater to the connectivity needs of rural and underserved areas, addressing the challenges posed by geographical remoteness and limited infrastructure. By extending connectivity to these regions, the project aims to foster economic growth, knowledge sharing, and e-governance.
Cost and Phased Approach
For Phase-1 of the project, an estimated cost of over Rs. 100 crores has been allocated. This significant investment highlights the government’s commitment to deploying state-of-the-art technology to uplift its citizens’ lives and drive overall development. The phased approach allows for scalability and flexibility, ensuring that the project’s benefits can be extended to more areas in subsequent stages.
Bridging the Digital Divide through Digital India
Aligned with the Digital India initiative, the satellite network portal site project is designed to provide affordable, secure, and high-speed internet access to villages, district panchayats, local administrative bodies, government departments, and other entities across the country. By strengthening digital infrastructure in remote areas, the project seeks to bridge the digital divide and enable equal opportunities for growth and development.
Employment Opportunities
Apart from the transformative impact on digital connectivity, the project is also expected to generate approximately 500 direct and indirect employment opportunities in Gujarat. This presents a significant boost to the state’s economy, promoting skill development and attracting investments in the technology sector.
