Seismic Survey Campaign

Seismic survey is conducted to obtain the geophysical information of rock formations using a seismograph.  The method generally records the pattern of induced shock wave reflections from underground layers of rock. It gives information regarding the properties and rock patterns and helps to assess the presence of minerals.

The seismic survey is conducted through a specially configured truck (vibroseis truck) which lowers a plate onto the surface.

Seismic Survey Campaign launched by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister

  • Recently, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has inaugurated a Seismic Survey Campaign. This is to be conducted by the state-owned PSU Oil India Limited.
  • The survey would be conducted in 5 blocks of Odisha in the Mahanadi river basin and its neighbouring regions.
  • The blocks are spread over 11 districts of Odisha- Kendrapara, Puri, Cuttack, Khurda, Jajpur, Jagatsingpur, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Baleshore, and Maurbhanj.

  • The total cost for exploration campaign in 5 blocks in Mahanadi Basin is Rs 1,248 crore.
  • OIL won these five blocks for hydrocarbon exploration as a part of the Government’s Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP).
  • OIL is planning to acquire process and interpret 2D seismic data of 1,502 line-Km and 3D seismic data of 1670 square km in the five blocks.
  • The Oil India Limited has been awarded with a total of number of 25 blocks which makes it the second-largest winner of exploration blocks under OALP.

Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP)

OALP allows a company to select explorations blocks for exploring hydrocarbons on its own without having to wait for a formal bid round of government. Such companies may apply to the government for exploration of new block.
