Skilled Indian Migrants Shift to Advanced Economies

Skilled Indian Migrants Shift to Advanced Economies

Recent data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reveals shift in the demographics of Indian migrants. The 2023-24 remittances survey indicates that skilled professionals are increasingly moving to advanced economies. This trend has resulted in the United States becoming the leading source of remittances to India, surpassing traditional Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

Remittance Trends in 2023-24

In the financial year 2023-24, the United States contributed 27.7% of total remittances to India. The United Arab Emirates followed with 19.2%. This marks a notable change from 2016-17 when the UAE held the top position with 26.9%. The shift marks the growing importance of advanced economies for Indian migrants.

Employment Patterns of Indian Migrants

Indian migrants in the US predominantly occupy high-earning white-collar jobs. Approximately 78% work in sectors like management, business, science, and arts. In contrast, many Indian migrants in the UAE are engaged in blue-collar roles, primarily in construction, healthcare, and hospitality. This difference in employment types explains the higher remittances from the US despite a smaller migrant population.

Regional Distribution of Remittances

Maharashtra has emerged as the top recipient of remittances, accounting for 20.5% in 2023-24. Kerala, which previously held the top spot, has dropped to second place with 19%. Tamil Nadu has also increased its share from 8% to 10.4%. These shifts reflect changing economic dynamics within India.

Global Context of Indian Remittances

India’s share of global remittances has risen from 11% in 2001 to approximately 14% in 2024. Major recipients of remittances globally include Mexico, China, and the Philippines. The World Bank projects that remittances to India will reach around USD 160 billion by 2029, indicating sustained growth.

Impact of Digitalisation

The cost of sending remittances to India has decreased due to digitalisation. In 2023-24, around 73.5% of remittances were sent through digital channels. This trend is reshaping how money is transferred internationally, making it more efficient and accessible.

Survey Methodology

The RBI survey was conducted with responses from 30 authorised dealer banks, covering about 99% of total inward remittances. It also included input from major money transfer operators and fintech companies. This comprehensive approach ensures the reliability of the data collected.

Future Projections

The trend of skilled migration to advanced economies is expected to continue. The growth in remittances is likely to be driven by the increasing number of Indian professionals settling abroad and the rising demand for their skills in global markets.
