SSLV-D2

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has taken another step forward in the development of its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) with the successful launch of the SSLV-D2 mission on February 10, 2023. This mission marked the second development flight for the SSLV and demonstrated the improvements made to the launch vehicle after the issues encountered during the first development flight (SSLV-D1). The SSLV-D2 mission is considered crucial for the future of the SSLV programme and the growth of India’s satellite launch capabilities.

The SSLV-D2 three satellites

EOS-07, AzaadiSat2, and Janus-1 – with a combined weight of 334 kg. The goal of the mission was to place these satellites in a 450-kilometer circular orbit. The SSLV is designed to be a cost-effective and quick-to-assemble option for small satellite launches. With the success of the SSLV-D2 mission, ISRO has shown that it is making progress towards its goal of becoming a leading provider of small satellite launch services.

One of the major advantages of the SSLV is its compact size and quick assembly time, which allows for faster launches and lower costs compared to other launch vehicles. The SSLV is capable of launching small satellites into low Earth orbit, which has become increasingly important as demand for satellite-based services continues to grow. The success of the SSLV-D2 mission will further boost ISRO’s reputation as a provider of reliable and cost-effective satellite launch services.

Cost-effectiveness and quick assembly time

The SSLV is also designed to be environmentally friendly. The launch vehicle uses non-toxic propellants, which reduces the risk of environmental damage in the event of a launch failure. This is becoming increasingly important as more countries adopt stricter environmental regulations for space activities.

The SSLV-D2 mission

It is a significant milestone for ISRO and demonstrates the organization’s continued commitment to innovation and excellence in the field of space technology. The success of this mission sets the stage for future launches and lays the foundation for a vibrant and thriving small satellite launch market in India.
