Strategic Zoji La, Razdan Passes Reopened Post-Winter

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) recently announced the reopening of two major passes: the Zoji La and Razdan Passes. These strategic passes, located in the Greater Himalayan Range, had been closed for the winter season. The Zoji La Pass, situated at an altitude of 11,650 feet, and the Razdan Pass, which provides a connection between the Gurez sector and the Kashmir Valley, have both been reopened after successful snow clearance operations were undertaken by Project Beacon and Vijayak from both sides of the pass.

Understanding the Significance of Zoji La Pass

Zoji La is more than just a high mountain pass; it plays a significant role in linking territories and providing crucial access routes. Located in the Kargil district of Ladakh, this pass serves as the main link between Leh and Srinagar, thus creating an essential connection between the Union Territories of Ladakh and Kashmir.

Unfortunately, the potential of the pass is hampered during winters due to heavy snowfall resulting in its closure for months on end. This effectively isolates the Ladakh region from Kashmir. In an effort to alleviate this issue, the Zoji La tunnel project was launched in 2018. This tunnel stands as the longest and most strategic bi-directional tunnel in Asia. Its presence ensures all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil, and Leh, transforming the transport and travel dynamics in the region even during heavy snowfall.

A Look at Other Important Passes in India

India’s diverse geographical landscape boasts several important passes that are integral to the country’s connectivity, defense, trade, and overall functioning. For instance, the Siachen Glacier pass is positioned to the north of the Nubra Valley. This was a question asked in the Previous Year Question (PYQ) session of the UPSC Civil Services Examination; a testament to its significance.

Notably, the strategic location of these passes has often made them points of contention as well, particularly from a defense standpoint. Therefore, maintaining them and ensuring their accessibility throughout the year is a top priority for the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The Role of Border Roads Organisation (BRO)

The Border Roads Organisation plays a crucial role in maintaining and managing these passes. The reopening of Zoji La and Razdan passes after their winter closure is just one of BRO’s regular operations. The organization undertakes snow clearance operations rigorously to ensure that these pivotal routes of connectivity are kept open.

The successful efforts to reopen these passes showcase not only the perseverance of the organisation, but also the immense national importance of these passes. It also reflects the commitment towards ensuring smoother travel and transport in both fair and inclement weather conditions. Optimizing the function and access of these passes is not just a matter of regional mobility, but a strategic necessity of national importance.
