The Ministry of Tourism, in its bid to develop sustainable infrastructure at destinations and promote tourism across the nation, has revamped its Swadesh Darshan Scheme into Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0). This revamp follows the mantra of ‘vocal for local’ and seeks to realize India’s full potential as a tourist haven.
About Swadesh Darshan Scheme
Envisioned in 2014-15, the Swadesh Darshan Scheme was an initiative aimed at the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits such as the Buddhist Circuit, Coastal Circuit, Desert Circuit, Eco Circuit, Heritage Circuit, among others. The scheme was wholly funded by the central government, with efforts aimed at convergence with other state and central government schemes. Voluntary funding was also sought for the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Central Public Sector Undertakings and the Corporate Sector.
Significance and Objectives of the Scheme
Under the Swadesh Darshan and PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive) schemes, the Ministry of Tourism provided financial assistance to the states and Union Territories for the development of tourism infrastructure. The sanctioning of projects hinged on multiple criteria like availability of funds, submission of detailed project reports, and adherence to scheme guidelines.
The scheme’s objective was multifaceted. One of its primary goals was to position tourism as a major driver of economic growth and job creation. A focused effort was made to develop circuits with tourist potential in a planned manner while promoting the cultural and heritage value of the nation. The scheme aimed at community-based development and the promotion of pro-poor tourism. The overall intention was to make full use of the infrastructure, national culture, and each region’s characteristic strengths by developing theme-based circuits.
Enter Swadesh Darshan Scheme 2.0
Swadesh Darshan 2.0 represents not just an incremental change but a generational shift in the approach to tourism development in India. This revamped version aims for an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” by showcasing India’s untapped potential as a prime tourism destination. It encourages the development of benchmarks and standards for generic and theme-specific development of tourism destinations. The states are then expected to follow these benchmarks and standards while planning and developing their projects.
Major Themes Identified for Tourism under the Scheme
Tourism, under this scheme, is set to be a diverse mix catering to various interests. Major themes identified include Cultural and Heritage, Adventure Tourism, Eco-Tourism, Wellness Tourism, MICE Tourism, Rural Tourism, Beach Tourism, and Cruises. This multi-pronged approach will help cater to a wide spectrum of tourists both domestically and internationally.
Swadesh Darshan 2.0 promises a significant push towards responsible and sustainable tourism, incorporating local communities and cultural heritage. With India’s abundant natural beauty, rich historical and cultural heritage, the revamped scheme holds exciting prospects for the nation’s tourism sector.
