Bangladesh’s Top Civilian Honour

Bangladesh has announced the recipients of its most prestigious civilian honor for 2021, the Independence Award or Swadhinta Puraskar. This accolade is bestowed upon individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to various fields in the country. The Cabinet department of the government released the names of the deserving winners through an official press statement.

Announcement of the Awardees

The 2021 list of Independence Award winners includes nine individuals and one organization, each recognized for their outstanding service to the nation. These recipients have been acknowledged for their exceptional contributions in areas such as the liberation war, science and technology, literature, culture, social and public service, as well as research and training.

Freedom Fighters Honored Posthumously

Among the awardees, four individuals have been honored posthumously under the category of freedom fighters. These individuals played pivotal roles during the liberation war of Bangladesh. The late freedom fighters awarded are Ahsan Ullah Master, a former Member of Parliament and labor leader; A K M Bazlur Rahman, a journalist and political activist; Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, a former politician and businessman; and Brig Gen. Khurshid Uddin Ahmed, a valiant military officer. Their contributions to the nation’s struggle for independence remain etched in the country’s history.

Recognition in Science and Technology

For his significant input in the realm of science and technology, Mrinmoy Guha Niyogi has been selected as a recipient of the Independence Award. His work has contributed to the advancement of scientific understanding and technological progress within Bangladesh, helping to pave the way for future innovations.

Literature and Culture Contributions

The field of literature is being graced with the award going to Mahadev Saha, a poet who has enriched Bangladeshi literature with his works. In the sphere of culture, two individuals are being recognized: Gazi Mazharul Anwar, a renowned lyricist, and Ataur Rahman, an actor and director. Both have made considerable contributions that have shaped the cultural landscape of the country.

Social and Public Service Achievement

M Amzad Hossain is set to receive the Independence Award for his dedication to social and public service. His efforts have had a positive impact on the welfare of the community, demonstrating a commitment to improving the lives of others through service.

Organizational Excellence in Research and Training

The Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council, an organization dedicated to agricultural research and training, is also among the honored recipients. Their work has been instrumental in advancing agricultural practices, research, and education, which is vital for a country where a large portion of the economy relies on agriculture.

The Prestige of the Independence Award

Since its inception in 1977, the Independence Award has been given annually in anticipation of Bangladesh’s Independence Day. This award not only serves as a symbol of the nation’s gratitude but also as an inspiration for future generations to contribute to the prosperity and development of Bangladesh. Each recipient of the award is presented with a gold medal and a financial reward of Taka 5 lakh, acknowledging their dedication and service to the nation.
