Swarnim Himalaya Campaign

The Swarnim Himalaya campaign, organized by the team ‘Healing Himalaya’ in collaboration with various government departments and civic bodies, aims to tackle the issue of plastic waste in the Himalayan region. With the active involvement of over 100,000 volunteers, including renowned Bollywood actress Dia Mirza, the campaign is making significant progress in cleaning up the picturesque landscapes of Himachal Pradesh.

Targeting High Tourism Footfall Areas:

  • Focused Cleanliness Efforts: The Swarnim Himalaya campaign specifically targets areas with high tourism footfall, where the accumulation of plastic waste has become a pressing concern.
  • Raising Awareness: The campaign aims to raise awareness among individuals about their responsibility in maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and promoting sustainable habits.

Mobilizing a Large Number of Participants:

  • Collaborating with Village Panchayats and Schools: The campaign actively engages with 30 village Panchayats, 10 schools, and various towns in Himachal Pradesh, mobilizing a large number of people to actively participate in the cleanliness drive.
  • Empowering Civil Society: Swarnim Himalaya empowers civil society participation, creating a powerful movement that can bring about mindset changes and foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Promoting Extended Producer’s Responsibility:

  • Holding Producers Accountable: The campaign recognizes the importance of Extended Producer’s Responsibility (EPR) and urges producers to take responsibility for the plastic waste generated by their products.
  • Shared Responsibility: By emphasizing the role of producers in curbing plastic pollution, the campaign ensures that accountability is not solely placed on consumers but also on the producers who have a significant impact on waste generation.

Creating Data for Accountability:

  • Collection of Plastic Waste: Healing Himalaya, along with campaign volunteers, collects approximately 5 tons of plastic waste daily from the Himalayan region.
  • Identifying Major Contributors: By analyzing this data, the campaign aims to identify the companies that contribute most significantly to plastic waste in the Himalayas. This information can then be used to hold these companies accountable and encourage them to adopt more sustainable practices.
