Tea Chemicals Could Block Coronavirus: IHBT Study

The recent news during an online event on International Tea Day has brought to the forefront claims by the Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Himachal Pradesh. According to the institute, certain chemicals found in tea can enhance immunity and stifle coronavirus activity more effectively than some anti-HIV drugs. IHBT, situated in Palampur of Himachal Pradesh, is part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

A Concentration on Polyphenols

One of the critical points discussed during the webinar was the potential power of polyphenols, bioactive chemicals that could potentially bind more efficiently to a specific viral protein than currently available anti-HIV drugs used for Covid-19 treatment. These chemicals have the potential to obstruct the functioning of the virus by blocking the activity of the viral protein, which aids the virus in thriving within human cells.

Use of Anti-HIV Drugs in COVID-19 Treatment

A combination of antiviral medications, specifically Lopinavir and Ritonavir, are being utilized across many countries worldwide as a treatment protocol for Covid-19. The new findings related to Kangra tea surfaced after another research study where scientists from both India and Japan theorized that Ashwagandha, a well-known herb in Ayurveda, could function as an effective anti-Covid-19 drug.

About Polyphenols

Polyphenols play an integral role in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, tea, dark chocolate, and wine. They possess antioxidant properties that can potentially offer protection against various diseases. Flavonoids, phenolic acid, polyphenolic amides, and other polyphenols are among the subdivisions of polyphenols. Adding to their benefits, polyphenols may prevent blood clotting, reduce blood sugar levels, and decrease the risk of heart diseases. Polyphenols can promote efficient brain function and improved digestion. It is speculated that they offer a certain degree of protection against cancer as well.

The Kangra Tea

Kangra tea, native to the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, is celebrated for its distinctive color and flavor. Awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, Kangra tea is a treasure-trove of antioxidants like catechins and polyphenols. The consumption of this tea is believed to offer various health benefits, including weight loss promotion, enhanced immunity, better oral health, and improved mental alertness. The versatility of Kangra tea extends beyond its consumption, as it’s also used in creating products like sanitizers, soaps, vinegar, and wine.
