In recent times, all states and union territories in India have adopted an electronic detailed accident report (eDAR) application for recording road crashes. This digital platform has already registered over seven lakh accidents, revolutionizing the way accident data is collected and analyzed.

Introducing the eDAR Project

The eDAR project, also known as the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) project, is an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India. Supported by the World Bank, the project aims to develop an integrated road accident database to gather comprehensive accident data from all corners of the country. By implementing data analytics techniques, the project aims to generate valuable insights and enhance road safety measures.

Streamlining Accident Reporting and Analysis

One of the key components of the eDAR project is the adoption of a mobile application that enables police personnel to enter detailed information about road accidents. The app allows them to upload photos and videos of the accident scene, ensuring accurate and comprehensive data collection. Each recorded accident is assigned a unique ID, facilitating easy tracking and reference.

Collaboration for In-Depth Analysis

To ensure a holistic approach to accident prevention, the eDAR project involves collaboration between different stakeholders. After the initial report is filed by the police, an engineer from the Public Works Department or the local body is alerted via their mobile device. This engineer visits the accident site, conducts a thorough examination, and provides additional information, such as the road design and infrastructure details. This collaboration between law enforcement and engineering professionals helps gather crucial data to analyze the factors contributing to accidents.

Data Analysis for Effective Interventions

Once the accident data is collected, it is sent to a dedicated team at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) for analysis. The team employs advanced data analytics techniques to uncover patterns, identify risk factors, and suggest potential interventions. By analyzing the collected data, the team can determine if corrective measures in road design, signage, or infrastructure need to be implemented to prevent similar accidents in the future.
