Tirath Singh Rawat was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He has taken the post a day after the resignation of former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat.

Key Points

  • Tirath Singh Rawat took oath as the new chief minister of Uttarakhand by Governor Baby Rani Maurya at the Raj Bhawan in Dehradun.
  • The 56-year-old was picked over prominent candidates including Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat at a meeting of Uttarakhand BJP’s legislature party.
  • A BJP MP from the Pauri constituency, Tirath Singh Rawat was the chief of the party in Uttarakhand in 2013-15.

Resignation of Trivendra Singh Rawat

Trivendra Singh Rawat was asked by the party to leave the post. The causes behind this are said to be some controversial decisions by the former CM. One of these decisions was the Char Dham Devasthanam Management Bill, which brought 51 shrines, including Yamunotri, Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Gangotri, under the control of the State government, with a limited role for those managing the affairs of these shrines till now.

The other decision which is considered a reason is setting up the Gairsain Commissionerate, adding districts to this new administrative unit from both the Garhwal and Kumaon areas. A corruption case was also filed against Rawat.
