Trump’s 20-Point Gaza Peace Plan Unveiled

Trump’s 20-Point Gaza Peace Plan Unveiled

The US President Donald Trump announced a detailed 20-point proposal aimed at ending the Gaza conflict. The plan comes nearly two years after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel. It was revealed after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the US. The proposal outlines steps for disarmament, governance, security, and humanitarian aid in Gaza. Hamas has yet to accept the plan, while several Arab nations, China, and Russia have expressed support. The plan also has implications for the wider Middle East, the US, and India.

Key Disarmament and Safe Passage Provisions

The plan demands Hamas disarm and surrender. Members willing to renounce violence will receive amnesty. Those who want to leave Gaza will be granted safe passage to countries like Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, or Iran. This is a major challenge since Hamas has controlled Gaza for nearly two decades. Israel must also honour the safe passage promise. The success of this step is crucial for peace.

International Stabilization Force and Security Measures

An International Stabilization Force (ISF) will be deployed in Gaza. This force, supported by the US, Arab nations, and international partners, will train Palestinian police. Jordan and Egypt will advise on security. Israel will withdraw its forces gradually as security improves. However, a security perimeter presence of Israeli forces will remain to prevent terror threats. The ISF will control munitions flow and ensure goods reach Gaza.

Governance and Reconstruction Framework

Gaza’s governance will shift to a temporary technocratic Palestinian committee. This group will manage daily services and be overseen by an international body called the Board of Peace. Donald Trump will lead this board, with members including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. The plan prioritises rebuilding infrastructure and public services. Blair’s involvement has drawn criticism due to his controversial past in the Middle East.

Humanitarian Aid and Prisoner Exchanges

The plan allows unrestricted humanitarian aid through the UN and Red Crescent. Infrastructure repairs and hospital rehabilitation are included. A key condition is the release of all hostages held by Hamas within 72 hours of Israel accepting the plan. Israel will reciprocate by releasing prisoners and remains of deceased Gazans. Currently, Hamas holds 48 hostages, with ongoing protests in Jerusalem demanding their return.

Regional and Global Reactions

Eight Arab and Muslim countries, including Qatar, Jordan, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, have welcomed the proposal. China and Russia also expressed support. Iran’s exclusion is notable given its influence in the region. The plan’s success depends on regional guarantees that Gaza will not threaten neighbours. The involvement of Pakistan alongside Arab nations in backing the plan signals evolving diplomatic ties.

Implications for Trump and India

For Trump, this plan could enhance his legacy as a peacemaker and boost his Nobel Prize prospects. It also opens business opportunities in Gaza’s reconstruction, benefiting Trump’s associates. For India, peace in the Middle East is vital due to its large diaspora, energy imports, and economic ties. Stability could boost investments and support the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. However, Pakistan’s role in the plan may complicate India-US relations.
