With a cost of GBP 270 million annually, this program has the potential to identify or prevent around 9,000 cancer cases per year.
Objective: Catching Cancer at an Early Stage
The primary objective of the targeted lung cancer screening program is to detect cancer at an early stage when treatment is more effective. The program identifies high-risk individuals based on their smoking history and other factors and invites them for specialist scans every two years. By proactively detecting lung cancer in its early stages, this program has the potential to save thousands of lives each year.
Successful Rollout of the Initial Phase
The targeted lung cancer screening program follows the successful implementation of the initial phase. During this phase, approximately 70% of screenings took place in mobile units strategically located in accessible areas, such as supermarket car parks. The focus was on reaching deprived communities with higher smoking rates. This approach yielded promising results, with 76% of cases detected through the program being at an earlier stage compared to only 29% in 2019 outside the program.
Improving Survival Rates
Currently, the survival rates for lung cancer vary significantly depending on the stage of diagnosis. Approximately 60% of people with stage 1 cancer survive for five years or more, compared to only 4% at stage 4. The targeted lung cancer screening program has the potential to significantly improve survival rates by catching cancer early and providing timely interventions. By identifying individuals at high risk, the program ensures that they receive the necessary treatment at an early stage, maximizing their chances of survival.
Focus on Smoking Cessation
In addition to early detection, the targeted lung cancer screening program emphasizes the importance of smoking cessation services. Smokers identified as high-risk during the assessment process will be offered support to quit smoking. By addressing the root cause of many lung cancer cases, this program takes a comprehensive approach to prevent future cases and improve overall public health.
Addressing Health Inequalities
The program recognizes the presence of health inequalities and aims to address them. By focusing on reaching individuals in more deprived communities, where smoking rates are higher, the program aims to provide equal access to screenings and early detection. Phased Implementation for Maximum Impact
The targeted lung cancer screening program will be implemented in phases. The goal is to reach 40% of the eligible population by March 2025 and achieve 100% coverage by March 2030. This phased approach allows for effective integration into the healthcare system and supports the government’s objective for England to be smoke-free by 2030.
