Union Cabinet Approves PRITHVI Scheme for Earth Sciences

The Union Cabinet has recently given its nod to the new comprehensive scheme, “PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI),” initiated by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. This scheme, incorporating five sub-schemes, is designed to augment Earth System Sciences and deliver pivotal services beneficial for societal, environmental, and economic welfare. The Union Cabinet also approved a collaborative agreement between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) to jointly develop a “small satellite.”

Historical Background

This latest cooperation builds on a long-standing relationship between India and Mauritius dating back to the 1980s. It was during this period that ISRO set up a ground station in Mauritius providing tracking and telemetry support for ISRO’s satellite and launch vehicle missions.

Unveiling the “PRITHvi VIgyan (PRITHVI)” Scheme

The PRITHVI scheme is a major initiative from the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) intended to be operational from 2021 to 2026. This scheme assimilates five existing sub-schemes which are:

– ACROSS: Concerned with Atmosphere and Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services
– O-SMART: Focused on Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources, and Technology
– PACER: Targeting Polar Science and Cryosphere Research
– SAGE: Dedicated to Seismology and Geosciences with a focus on earthquake monitoring and research
– REACHOUT: Aiming at Research, Education, Training, and Outreach

The scheme incorporates six core activities, including seismological monitoring and microzonation. It addresses the five components of Earth System Sciences – atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere, thereby fostering an improved understanding and delivering reliable services for the nation.

Objectives

The PRITHVI scheme is geared to boost and sustain long-term observations of the atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere, and solid earth. The scheme is designed to develop modelling systems for understanding and predicting weather, ocean and climate hazards, and exploring polar and high seas regions of the Earth. The scheme also aims to contribute to technological advancements for exploring and sustainably harnessing oceanic resources for societal good.

Benefits for India

PRITHVI offers multiple benefits for India including advanced warning services for natural disasters like cyclones, floods, heatwaves, and earthquakes. These warnings will aid timely and efficient disaster management. The scheme also offers precise weather forecasts for land and maritime regions, thereby enhancing safety and reducing property damages in inclement weather conditions. Furthermore, the scheme has extended its research ambit to include the three poles of the Earth – Arctic, Antarctic, and Himalayas providing valuable insights about these regions.
