Union Minister Inaugurates Research Centers at Amrita Hospital

Marking its Silver Jubilee, Amrita Hospital, located in Kochi, Kerala, inaugurated two advanced research centers at its Amritapuri and Kochi campuses. The Union Home Minister highlighted these developments during the event. These centers aim to drive advancements in medical science and technology, fortifying the educational infrastructure of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.

Apart from celebrating its own achievements such as conducting India’s first micro-blood stem cell transplant and the largest number of robotic liver transplants, the event also acknowledged the nationwide progress in medical education infrastructure. In particular, it underscored the impressive growth in the number of medical colleges, which has risen from 387 to 648. Establishments like the 22 new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have further broadened access to quality healthcare services across India.

Punjab-Himachal Pradesh Conflict Over Shanan Hydropower Project

The upcoming expiry of the lease on the British-era 110 MW Shanan hydropower project in March 2024 has triggered a potential discord between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Located on the Uhl river in Jogindernagar, Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, the project is currently controlled by Punjab, which aims to retain its hold even post-lease expiry, hinting at possible legal steps to achieve this. On the contrary, the Himachal Pradesh Government is holding firm on its stance to regain control over the project after the lease expiration.

The Indian Prime Minister drew attention to the 350th year of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Coronation Day, deeming it a momentous event in Indian history. The prime minister accentuated how the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, founded on principles of self-governance, good governance, and prosperity, continues to inspire the nation. In honor of Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions, the Indian Navy substituted the British rule flag with Shivaji Maharaj’s emblem, symbolizing India’s maritime pride.

Government Imposes Stock Limits on Tur and Urad Dal

In a decisive move against hoarding and unregulated speculation, and to increase affordability for consumers, the Government of India has implemented an order that imposes a stock limit on tur dal and urad dal. The Removal of Licensing Requirements, Stock Limits and Movement Restrictions on Specified Foodstuffs (Amendment) Order, 2023, came into effect on June 2, 2023, applying to wholesalers, retailers, big chain retailers, millers, and importers. This directive fixes stock limits until October 31, 2023, for all States and Union Territories. Legal entities are mandated to disclose their respective stock positions on the Department of Consumer Affairs’ portal within 30 days of the notification.
