US Surpasses Saudi Arabia as India’s 2nd Biggest Oil Supplier

The United States has marked a significant milestone in its oil export history. In the latest reports, it has been noted that the U.S. has emerged as the second-largest oil supplier to India, outpacing Saudi Arabia and positioning itself just below Iraq. This shift highlights the evolving dynamics of global oil trade and India’s diversifying import strategy.

Surge in US Oil Imports by India

Recent data from trade sources indicates that India’s refiners have ramped up their purchases of U.S. crude oil. The increase is attributed to the competitive pricing of U.S. oil and a strategic move to counterbalance the production cuts implemented by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+). In February, imports from the United States soared by 48%, reaching a record high of 545,300 barrels per day (bpd). This surge propelled the U.S. to account for 14% of India’s total oil imports for the month.

Decline in Saudi Arabian Oil Imports

In stark contrast to the U.S.’s upward trajectory, the volume of oil imported from Saudi Arabia by India experienced a significant drop. February saw a 42% reduction in Saudi oil imports compared to the previous month, plunging to a ten-year low of 445,200 bpd. This decline has resulted in Saudi Arabia falling to the fourth position among India’s oil suppliers—a ranking it hasn’t held since at least January 2006.

Iraq Remains India’s Top Supplier

Despite the shifts in supply dynamics, Iraq continues to be the leading oil supplier to India. However, even Iraq wasn’t immune to the changing patterns, as its sales to India decreased by 23%, hitting a five-month low of 867,500 bpd. The reasons behind this drop were not detailed, but it is indicative of the broader changes occurring within the oil markets and India’s procurement strategies.

The United States as the World’s Leading Oil Producer

The rise of the United States as a key oil supplier to India is underpinned by its status as the world’s top oil producer. Based on 2019 data, the U.S. oil output stood at an impressive 12,248,020 barrels per day, surpassing both Russia and Saudi Arabia. This prolific production capacity has enabled the U.S. to become a major player in the global oil market, catering to the energy needs of large importers like India.

The shift in India’s oil import patterns reflects a broader trend of diversification and strategic purchasing within the energy sector. As the U.S. continues to solidify its position as a leading oil producer, it is likely to further influence global supply chains and the decision-making processes of major oil-importing nations.
