US Hosts Supply Chain Ministerial Forum 2022

The US State Department recently released the Joint Statement of the 2022 Supply Chain Ministerial Forum, highlighting global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, wars and conflicts, and climate change. This article is aimed at detailing the objectives and intentions of this forum, its approach towards resilient supply chains and India’s related Supply Resilience Initiative.

The 2022 Supply Chain Ministerial Forum

In July 2022, the United States hosted the Supply Chain Ministerial Forum with the primary objective of advancing work to reduce and end near-term supply chain disruptions. The initiative is also focused on collaborating to build supply chain resiliency to avoid similar disruptions in the future.

Objective Of The Forum: Building a Resilient Supply Chain

The long-term agenda of the forum is to establish resilient supply chains based on international partnerships. Various global supply chain principles such as transparency, diversification, security, and sustainability are being followed by partner countries in their collective effort to strengthen supply chains.

Ensuring Transparency

The forum promotes transparency in consultation with the private sector, civil society, different levels of government, and other relevant stakeholders. This approach is consistent with participants’ domestic laws and international obligations and is aimed at strengthening the resilience of global supply chains.

Diversification and Global Capacity

Diversification and increased global capacities for multiple, reliable, and sustainable sources are being promoted for materials and inputs, intermediate goods, and finished goods in priority sectors. This, along with logistics infrastructure capacities, is expected to increase the resilience of supply chains and make our economies less vulnerable to disruptions and shocks.

Sustainability

The forum encourages global sustainability and responsible business conduct across supply chains. It maintains objectives set out in relevant multilateral environmental agreements including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.

Partner Economies

The forum comprises of several partner economies including Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

India’s Supply Resilience Initiative

The Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI) launched in 2021 between India, Japan, and Australia is aimed at creating a virtuous cycle of enhancing supply chain resilience. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to attain strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth in the Indo-Pacific region.

With the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) transforming itself into a trade bloc from a military alliance, it’s clear that the focus on resilient supply chains is becoming increasingly relevant and important on a global scale.
