US-India Defence Partnership Framework for 2025-2035

US-India Defence Partnership Framework for 2025-2035

India and the United States are advancing discussions on a new defence partnership framework. This framework will span from 2025 to 2035. It aims to enhance military cooperation and streamline procurement processes. The initiative follows a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. The final agreement is expected to be concluded later this year.

Objectives of the Defence Framework

The primary goal is to strengthen defence ties between India and the US. The framework will facilitate easier procurement of defence goods and services. This will enhance the efficiency of defence trade. The partnership will also focus on technology sharing and joint military exercises.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The framework will cover multiple areas. These include space technology, air defence systems, missile systems, and maritime security. Both nations are committed to enhancing interoperability between their armed forces. This will ensure that US-origin defence equipment can be integrated seamlessly into India’s military operations.

Reciprocal Defence Procurement Agreement

Negotiations for a Reciprocal Defence Procurement (RDP) agreement will begin soon. This agreement aims to align procurement systems. It will allow for the reciprocal supply of defence goods and services. This is expected to simplify the purchasing process for both countries.

Review of Arms Transfer Regulations

A review of arms transfer regulations is also on the agenda. This includes the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). The aim is to facilitate smoother defence trade and technology transfer. This review will aid in the maintenance of US-provided defence systems in India.

Strategic Trade Authorisation

India’s designation as a Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 (STA-1) partner enhances its position. This status allows for greater access to advanced military technologies. It also strengthens India’s role within the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad).

Defence Technology Cooperation

The leaders have committed to accelerating defence technology cooperation. Areas of focus include undersea technologies and advanced fighter jets. The US is reviewing policies on the transfer of fifth-generation fighter jets to India. This could boost India’s air capabilities.

Future Procurement Initiatives

Both nations plan to finalise the procurement of additional P-8I Maritime Patrol aircraft. This will enhance India’s maritime surveillance capabilities. Other initiatives include the procurement of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles and Stryker infantry combat vehicles.

Integration of Defence Equipment

The joint statement brought into light the integration of various US-origin defence systems into India’s military. This includes aircraft like the C-130J Super Hercules and the P-8I Poseidon. The integration aims to improve operational readiness and effectiveness.

COMPACT Initiative

The agreements fall under the “US-India COMPACT for the 21st Century.” This initiative aims to drive advancements in military cooperation. It focuses on enhancing trade and technology partnerships.
