Vernon Dvorak, Creator of Weather Forecasting Technique, Dies

Recent news has reported the passing of the American meteorologist, Vernon Dvorak. His contributions to weather forecasting are substantial and have shaped the way we predict weather today. Vernon Dvorak is best known for developing the Dvorak Technique in the early 1970s. Named after him, this ingenious technique has changed the landscape of meteorology.

Understanding the Dvorak Technique

The Dvorak Technique is a Cloud Pattern Recognition Technique (CPRT) based on a conceptual model of the development and decay of the tropical cyclone. Initially developed in 1969, it was tested in relation to storms observed in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

The technique uses available satellite images from polar orbiting satellites to assess the characteristics of developing tropical storms, such as hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons. Depending on the time of day, different types of images are used. During the day, visuals in the visible spectrum are utilized, while at nighttime, infrared images are used to examine the ocean.

The Dvorak Technique helps forecasters recognize patterns from the observed structure of the storm, locate its eye, and estimate the storm’s intensity. While it does not aid in making predictions or measuring other meteorological parameters associated with the cyclone like wind or pressure, it provides an essential guide to estimating the storm’s intensity and possible intensification.

The Value of the Dvorak Technique Today

Despite having a more refined network of land-based meteorological observations today, ocean observations remain limited. Several regions across the globe’s four oceans have not been adequately examined with meteorological instruments. As a result, meteorologists depend heavily on satellite-based imagery combined with existing ocean data to forecast the intensity and wind speed of tropical cyclones.

This necessity for satellite information has kept the Dvorak Technique relevant. Although numerous state-of-the-art tools like model guidance, animations, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other satellite technologies are available today, advanced versions of the Dvorak Technique continue to be widely used.

Highlights from UPSC Civil Services Examination Previous Year Question

An understanding of meteorological concepts and applications is essential for various examinations. For example, in the 2020 examination, one question was on the occurrence of jet streams and cyclones. Knowledge about the formation and temperature conditions within a cyclone’s eye is critical to answer such queries correctly.

In the 2015 examination, a question on the origin of cyclones in the South Atlantic and South-Eastern Pacific regions was asked. The correct answer highlighted the lack of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over these regions, impacting cyclone formation.

Delineating the Significance of Colour-Coded Weather Warnings

The India Meteorological Department provides colour-coded weather warnings for cyclone-prone areas. These colour codes are significant in conveying the severity and potential impact of expected weather conditions. Understanding their meaning helps in effective planning and response during adverse weather events.
