Vikalp Sangam – A Catalyst for Sustainable Development

The Vikalp Sangam platform recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in Kutch. This national gathering took place from November 21-23, 2024. It brought together representatives from grassroots communities, social movements, and non-governmental organisations. The focus was on addressing pressing environmental, social, economic, and governance issues. Over 130 participants engaged in discussions and activities aimed at promoting sustainable solutions.

Key Themes of the Gathering

The event telld critical challenges like hunger, unemployment, and environmental degradation. Participants brought into light the need for solutions that do not displace communities or erode livelihoods. There was a strong emphasis on protecting natural ecosystems while encouraging creative livelihoods.

Addressing Systemic Inequalities

Inequalities based on gender, caste, class, and ability were central topics. The gathering aimed to strengthen democratic participation in decision-making processes. Participants committed to initiatives that promote equity and inclusion.

Strategies for Sustainable Solutions

Key strategies were proposed to document grassroots initiatives and facilitate capacity-building programmes. Promoting youth engagement in alternative development models was also a priority. The participants stressed the importance of creating a national movement that links justice struggles with sustainable solutions.

Local Challenges and Opportunities

The unique challenges of Kutch were brought into light, particularly the loss of land due to industrialisation and the impacts of climate change on local communities. Gender inequality in decision-making remained a critical concern. Strengthening self-governance in both village and urban settings was identified as essential.

Field Visits and Cultural Exchange

Participants visited transformative projects in Kutch, such as the Living and Learning Design Centre. These visits showcased sustainable development practices and the region’s rich cultural heritage. The event also celebrated cultural diversity through activities like pottery, weaving, and painting.
