The President of India will inaugurate the Vindhyagiri frigate at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited in Kolkata on August 17. This vessel, named after a mountain range in Karnataka, is the sixth ship of the advanced Project 17A frigates. These warships are part of the follow-on to the Shivalik Class (Project 17) frigates, featuring enhanced stealth capabilities, advanced weaponry, sensors, and management systems. The Project 17A initiative involves four ships constructed by Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited. The ships boast designs from the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, with a significant proportion of indigenous equipment and systems.
