Voice of the Global South Summit

The COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have had a significant impact on the world, particularly on developing countries. To articulate the views of these countries and discuss the challenges they face, India will be holding a major international summit next week. The event, called the �Voice of the Global South Summit,� will be held virtually on January 12th and 13th, 2023, and will bring together countries from the global south to share their perspectives and priorities on a range of issues.

Purpose of the Summit

  • According to Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, invitation letters have been sent to participants from �more than 120 countries�. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, who presented the idea of the event, described it as a “unique and new initiative� which will generate ideas that will be taken forward at the global level.
  • He added that the theme of the summit is ‘Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose,’ and it aims to bring together countries of the global south on a common platform to discuss a wide range of issues.

Ministerial Sessions

  • The summit will have eight ministerial sessions that will cover various topics such as finance, energy, education, foreign affairs, and commerce. One of the sessions will focus on generating ideas for India�s G-20 Presidency.
  • This summit will provide an opportunity for countries to come together and discuss the challenges they face and to come up with solutions to those challenges.

Participation

  • It is not yet confirmed if participants from Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan will be part of the summit. However, India has traditionally supported the cause of the �Global South�, and this summit is expected to take that tradition forward.
  • The government is hopeful that the virtual summit will enable countries to come together and address the issues faced by the global south.
