The West African Power Pool (WAPP) is a group of national electricity companies in Western Africa that have come together to provide reliable and efficient electricity to the people of the region. The primary objective of this organisation is to create an integrated electricity network in the region that can ensure the stability and security of power supply, as well as facilitate the ease of buying and selling electricity. It was established in 2010 with the support of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The West African Power Pool
The WAPP has been working to develop a reliable and efficient electricity network for the region by coordinating power systems and developing transmission lines to facilitate the free flow of electricity across national borders. The organisation aims to foster regional integration and promote economic growth by providing a reliable source of energy to businesses and individuals in the region. With the goal of achieving a unified power market, WAPP seeks to enhance the cooperation among its members and to promote private sector investments in the energy sector.
5-day event
To this end, the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and WAPP organised a 5-day event that was held in New Delhi, India. The event hosted delegates from 13 African countries, and its primary focus was on sharing best practices in the deployment of solar energy sources. The conference was part of the International Solar Alliance’s larger mission to promote the use of solar energy and to facilitate the development of solar power infrastructure in developing countries.
Use of solar energy
The use of solar energy is particularly important in Western Africa, where the region has abundant sunshine, but a high rate of energy poverty. The deployment of solar energy sources can help to provide a sustainable and affordable source of energy to the region, and can also reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Solar energy can help to drive economic development and alleviate poverty by providing power to homes, businesses, and industries.
During the conference, delegates discussed various topics related to solar energy, including solar power infrastructure development, renewable energy policies and regulations, innovative financing models, and the use of solar energy for agriculture, healthcare, and education. Participants also shared their experiences and lessons learned in implementing solar projects in their respective countries.
Conference highlights
The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration between the WAPP and the ISA in promoting the use of solar energy in Western Africa. The collaboration can help to leverage the expertise of both organisations to create a sustainable energy future for the region. It can also help to create opportunities for private sector investments in the energy sector, leading to economic growth and job creation.
