What is an Apartheid State?

A human rights group has called Israel an apartheid state, recently. Following this, Israel has banned the group in the country. It will also be banned from taking school lectures.

Why Israel is being tagged as Apartheid state?

Israel is being tagged as an Apartheid State because of its actions against the Palestinians. Israel had occupied the West Bank region. This move of Israel is being criticized and has been termed as apartheid.

What the term Apartheid mean?

Apartheid means a system of institutionalised racial segregation. This segregation existed in South Africa and South West Africa (Present day Namibia) from 1948. The term was characterised by the authoritarian political culture on the basis of white supremacy. This culture of white supremacy ensured that the country was dominated politically, socially, and economically by minority white population of the country.

Israel-West Bank issue

Israeli had started occupying the West Bank in the year 1967. This move by Israel was started during a six-day war which is still continuing. However, Israel reminds about Balfour Declaration as a clarification of retaining the West Bank.

Balfour Declaration

The Balfour Declaration was a public statement made by British Government during the first World War. With this declaration, the British had extended its support to establish a national home for Jewish people in Palestine. The ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict is considered to be the result of Balfour Declaration.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

The Balfour declaration has made the Palestine as the national home of Jews. This led to initiation of the conflict between the Jews and the Arabs in the region. The conflict between two states further widened after Palestine war during 1947-1949. The conflict still continues following military occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel in the year 1967 during a six-day war.

Solution of the conflict

The United Nations has put forward the Two State Solution in order to end the Israel-Palestine conflicts. The two State solution is based on the UN resolution of 1947.

Two State Solution

The Two State Solution is considered as the only realistic deal that could end the conflict between the Israel and Palestine. Under the deal, it is proposed that the area where Zionist Jews constituted a majority will be considered as one state while the other the other state will be where the Palestinian Arabs have a majority. But, this idea is not supported by the Arabs.
