What is Hydrazine Hydrate?

Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL), a state Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), has taken a significant step towards reducing India’s dependence on imports from Europe by commencing the dispatch of indigenously produced Hydrazine Hydrate. This chemical product finds wide applications in various industries and plays a crucial role as a reducing agent, chemical intermediate, and rocket propellant. GACL’s initiative, in collaboration with CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad, is aimed at strengthening domestic production capabilities and promoting self-reliance in the chemical sector.

Indigenous Manufacturing and Patents

GACL, in partnership with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) in Hyderabad, has achieved a milestone by receiving patents for the indigenous manufacturing of Hydrazine Hydrate. This accomplishment showcases the expertise and capabilities of Indian scientists and engineers in developing innovative chemical production processes. The patents validate the technical advancements made by GACL and CSIR-IICT, positioning them as pioneers in the production of Hydrazine Hydrate in India.

Commercial-Scale Production Plant

To support the increased demand for Hydrazine Hydrate, GACL has established a commercial-scale plant in Dahej. This state-of-the-art facility has the capacity to produce 10,000 metric tonnes per annum of the chemical. The plant’s efficient production processes and modern infrastructure ensure the delivery of high-quality Hydrazine Hydrate to various industries. By establishing indigenous manufacturing capabilities, GACL aims to reduce reliance on imports and contribute to the growth of the Indian chemical sector.

Applications of Hydrazine Hydrate

Hydrazine Hydrate, with the chemical formula N2H4·H2O, is a colorless liquid that finds extensive applications in diverse industries. It serves as a versatile chemical compound used as a reducing agent, chemical intermediate, and rocket propellant. In the treatment of boiler water, it acts as an oxygen scavenger. Hydrazine Hydrate also plays a vital role in the production of pesticides, agrochemicals, water treatment solutions, pharmaceuticals, polymers, and fine chemicals. Its broad range of applications highlights its significance across various sectors and industries.

Addressing Import Dependence

By domestically producing Hydrazine Hydrate, GACL aims to address India’s dependence on imports from Europe. Reducing import reliance enhances India’s self-sufficiency and strengthens the country’s position in the global chemical market. With the establishment of a commercial-scale plant, GACL can cater to the growing demand for Hydrazine Hydrate within the country, offering a reliable and cost-effective alternative to imported products. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of promoting domestic manufacturing and reducing import dependency in strategic sectors.

Purified Phosphoric Acid Plant

In addition to the Hydrazine Hydrate plant, GACL has also set up a Purified Phosphoric Acid plant. This move is aimed at meeting the demand for this chemical in various industries. Purified Phosphoric Acid is a vital component in the production of fertilizers, food additives, and industrial chemicals. GACL’s investment in this plant underscores its commitment to expanding its product portfolio and catering to the evolving needs of the market.
