What is Survey of India?

Established in 1767, the Survey of India under the Department of Science and Technology is one of the oldest scientific departments of the Indian Government. It is currently in charge of providing for the cartographic needs of India for ensuring integrated and viable use of resources required for the country’s progress towards prosperity and security.

The Civil Aviation Ministry recently provided a conditional permission to the SOI to use drones for mapping inhabited areas of villages under the SVAMITVA (Survey of villages and mapping with improvised technology in village areas) Scheme. This permission allows the SOI to undertake large-scale mapping of the villages.
