White Fungus Infection Rising Among Covid-19 Patients

Recent news has been highlighting a significant health concern. When the central government urged states to declare black fungus, also known as mucormycosis, an epidemic, another infection called white fungus or Candidiasis came to light. The latter seems to affect COVID-19 patients more frequently due to its impact on the lungs and its coronavirus-like symptoms. On the other hand, black fungus is a serious but uncommon fungal infection caused by a group of molds named mucormycetes, which thrive in our environment.

Understanding White Fungus or Candidiasis

Candidiasis, or white fungus, is a type of fungal infection attributed to yeast, specifically a strain known as Candida. This yeast typically inhabits the skin and various internal parts of the body such as the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina without causing any harm. However, if Candida multiplies uncontrollably or penetrates deeper into the body, targeting organs like the kidneys, heart, or brain, it can result in an infection. The most prevalent species responsible for this infection is Candida albicans.

The Causes of White Fungus Infection

White fungus infection usually occurs due to weakened immunity or when individuals come into contact with objects containing these molds, such as water. Women and children are more susceptible to this fungal infection. Similar to black fungus, white fungus is more likely to strike people with compromised immune systems – those with pre-existing medical conditions, HIV/AIDS, recent kidney transplant recipients, or diabetic individuals.

The Symptoms of White Fungus Infection

When the white fungus reaches the lungs, individuals may experience similar symptoms to COVID-19, such as chest infection, even if their virus test results are negative. In addition to the lungs, this fungus can affect various body parts including nails, skin, stomach, kidneys, brain, reproductive organs, and mouth.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Medical professionals can determine the presence of a white fungus infection through CT scans or X-rays. Currently, patients with white fungus are being treated with known anti-fungal medications.

Prevention of White Fungus Infection

Special caution is warranted in the case of molds in water which can lead to an infection. Proper sanitation plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of this fungus.

The ongoing battle against COVID-19 has now further complicated by the emergence of these fungal infections. Comprehensive awareness and understanding of these infections can contribute significantly towards effective prevention and management.
