World Patient Day

World Patient Day is observed on September 17 to raise global awareness about patient safety and make healthcare safer. It came into existence in 2019 after the 72nd World Health Assembly passed a resolution on “Global Action on Patient Safety”. It is the result of a successful series of yearly Global Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety that commenced in 2016.
The theme for World Patient Safety Day 2021 is “Safe maternity and newborn care”. The theme aims to promote safe delivery by eliminating avoidable causes of deaths connected to pregnancy and delivery. Deaths caused by medical error have gained significance as the healthcare system is stressed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
