World Youth Skills Day Highlights Challenges amid Covid-19

The 15th of July has been marked as World Youth Skills Day since its designation by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014. This day aims to provide better socio-economic conditions for the youth, addressing challenges such as unemployment and under-employment.

2020 Theme: Skills for a Resilient Youth

The theme set out for 2020 was “Skills for a Resilient Youth”. The UNGA suggests that this theme is more relevant than ever considering the Covid-19 pandemic has led to global closure of training institutions, threatening the longevity of skills development. School closures have affected nearly 70% of the world’s youth population.

The Alarming Increase in NEET Youth

The Global Trends for Youth 2020 report reveals that from 2017, there has been a rising trend in the number of youth who are not engaged in employment, education or training (NEET). This report is released annually by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). Hence, it has become vital to impart relevant skills to the youth to help them manage evolving challenges successfully over time.

2030 Agenda: Sustainable Development Through Education

Education and training hold a central position in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This vision aligns with the Incheon Declaration: Education 2030 which is encapsulated by Sustainable Development Goal-4. The goal outlines the need to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

Focus on Technical and Vocational Skills

Education 2030 extends its focus to technical and vocational skills development. It highlights the importance of acquiring these skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship. Another key aspect taken into consideration by Education 2030 is the elimination of gender disparity.

Skill India Mission: A Government Initiative

Furthermore, World Youth Skills Day also marks the 5th anniversary of the launch of Skill India Mission. The Government of India initiated this mission with the main aim to empower the youth with skill sets, thereby increasing their employability and productivity in their work environment.

Industry-Recognised Skilling Programs

Skill India offers courses across numerous sectors, maintaining alignment with standards recognised by both the industry and the government under the National Skill Qualification Framework. This initiative combines skill development with essential education, improving youth resilience and opportunity for growth on a national scale.

Overall, both international and national initiatives point towards the undeniable importance of skilling the youth for a resilient future and sustainable development.
