Sabarimala Prepares for Makara Vilakku Festival

Sabarimala Prepares for Makara Vilakku Festival

Sabarimala in Kerala is preparing for the annual Makara Vilakku festival, one of the most important events in the Ayyappa pilgrimage calendar. The observance coincides with Makara Sankrama night, when devotees gather to witness the Makarajyothi at Ponnambalamedu. The festival marks the peak of the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season and draws large numbers of devotees from across India.

Festival Significance

Makara Vilakku, also known as Makara Jyothi, is central to the spiritual calendar of Sabarimala Temple. Devotees regard the sighting of the divine light as a sacred moment associated with Lord Ayyappa’s blessings. The festival is linked to Makara Sankranti, the solar transition into Capricorn, and is considered the culmination of weeks of austerity by pilgrims.

Rituals and Procession

  • The Thiruvabharanam procession, carrying the sacred ornaments of Lord Ayyappa, is a key ritual.
  • The ornaments are taken in a ceremonial procession to the shrine before the main observance.
  • Evening rituals include deeparadhana and special prayers at the sanctum.
  • Devotees also take part in chanting, offerings and temple worship during the festival period.

Pilgrim Arrangements and Security

Thousands of pilgrims have already reached Sabarimala and are camping at different locations. Security has been strengthened at Sannidhanam and at the Makarajyothi viewing points. Restrictions have been placed on movement during peak hours to manage crowd flow and ensure safety. Only 30,000 pilgrims will be allowed through the virtual queue on Wednesday.

Administrative Measures and Crowd Management

The temple administration is focusing on regulated entry, crowd control and emergency preparedness. Medical support, surveillance and coordinated pilgrim movement are part of the arrangements. The measures aim to balance the scale of the pilgrimage with safety, discipline and smooth conduct of rituals.
