Badminton Asia Team Championships Begin in Qingdao

The 6th edition of the Badminton Asia Team Championships begins in Qingdao, China, bringing together leading men’s and women’s national teams from across Asia. India enters the event with both squads drawn into competitive groups. The women’s team will defend its title without two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, while the men’s team will seek a strong start against Japan and Singapore.

India’s Women’s Campaign

India’s women are placed in Group Y with fourth seeds Thailand and Myanmar. The squad includes Tanvi Sharma, Unnati Hooda, Malvika Bansod, and the doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. PV Sindhu has withdrawn from the tournament, making the team’s depth and balance more important in the title defence.

Men’s Team in Group C

India’s men are in Group C alongside fourth seeds Japan and Singapore. The side features Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The group stage is expected to test India’s singles strength as well as its doubles combinations.

Format and Competitive Significance

The Badminton Asia Team Championships is a continental team event for Asia’s top national sides. It provides ranking exposure, team-match experience and a key platform ahead of major international tournaments. Strong performances here often reflect the depth of a nation’s badminton system.

India’s Opening Matches

Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams will begin their campaigns tomorrow. Early results will be crucial because group-stage matches determine progression to the knockout rounds. India will aim to build momentum quickly in both sections of the draw.
