The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti will organise Jal Mahotsav 2026 from 8 March to 22 March 2026. The nationwide campaign will strengthen Jan Bhagidari and community ownership in rural drinking water service delivery under the Jal Jeevan Mission. It will link policy dialogue with village-level action and promote sustainable rural water governance.
Launch and National Observance
The campaign will begin on 8 March, coinciding with International Womenβs Day. The launch will recognise the role of women in water governance. The Union Minister of Jal Shakti will inaugurate the event from Navsari, Gujarat. Ministers of State will participate from Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Jal Arpan ceremonies will be held across States and Union Territories.
Meaning of Jal Arpan
- Jal Arpan marks the formal handover of rural drinking water schemes.
- The schemes are transferred to Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees.
- It reinforces community responsibility for operation and maintenance.
- It supports piped water supply systems under local management.
National Mega Event and Recognition
A national mega event will be held on 11 March 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of the President of India. Grassroots leaders will be recognised for their contribution to rural drinking water governance. The event will also include discussions on the Nal Jal Mitra Programme, water-nutrition-health convergence, and youth engagement through the AICTE-led Jal Seva Adhyayan initiative.
Jal Utsav Framework
Jal Mahotsav draws inspiration from the broader idea of Jal Utsav. It is envisioned at three levels. Jal Mahotsav will serve as the national convergence platform. Rajya Jal Utsav or Nadi Utsav will be promoted at the State level. Lok Jal Utsav will be encouraged at village and Panchayat level to embed water stewardship in local life.
