International Women’s Day will be marked in New Delhi with a women-led walk titled Shakti Walk #SheLeadsBharat along Kartavya Path. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to celebrate women’s leadership, contributions, and role in national development. It also seeks to reinforce the message that women-led development is central to a progressive and inclusive India.
Event Details
The walk will be held on 8 March 2026 from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. It will cover an approximately 2-kilometre route from India Gate to Vijay Chowk. Around 3,000 women are expected to participate. The participants will come from more than 150 Ministries, Departments and Organisations.
Participation and Representation
The event will include women from the Armed Forces, police, media, healthcare, sports, government institutions, industry, and grassroots organisations. Women officers from various Union ministries and departments have also been invited. Representatives from international organisations are expected to join the programme. The walk will be led by women public representatives, including Union Ministers, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, MLAs, and other prominent women leaders.
Programme Highlights
The programme will begin with brief addresses by dignitaries, followed by the ceremonial flag-off of the walk. Installations denoting key government schemes for women and achievements of women across sectors will be displayed along Kartavya Path. A curated cultural presentation at India Gate will feature performances such as Dollu Kunitha, Kalaripayattu, Sringarimelam, Ranchandi, and Ghoomar. The event will open with a mass rendition of Vande Mataram and conclude with the release of balloons carrying the message Shakti Walk – #SheLeadsBharat.
Significance
The walk aims to celebrate women’s achievements, promote solidarity among women from diverse backgrounds, and showcase the government’s commitment to women’s safety, security, and empowerment. It also aligns with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 by recognising women as key drivers of social and economic progress.
