The National Health Authority has concluded the NHCX Hackathon and Innovation Meet under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) to promote innovation in the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX). The two-day event was held on 6-7 March 2026 at IIT Hyderabad and marked the grand finale of the hackathon conducted from 22 February to 28 February 2026. The initiative focused on improving standardisation, interoperability and efficiency in health insurance claims processing.
About National Health Claims Exchange
NHCX is one of the three gateways under ABDM. It is designed to simplify and standardise health insurance claims across India. The platform enables seamless digital exchange of claims data among hospitals, insurers and patients. It aims to reduce delays, improve transparency and create a unified claims infrastructure.
Hackathon Themes and Solutions
The hackathon invited participants to address operational challenges in claims processing and ecosystem interoperability. Key problem statements included:
- Legacy systems to NHCX-aligned FHIR converters for eligibility check, claim, pre-authorisation and communication workflows.
- Clinical documents to structured FHIR data converters for diagnostic reports and discharge summaries.
- PDF to NHCX-aligned insurance plan FHIR bundle conversion.
- Business use cases for misuse and abuse detection using NHCX capabilities.
- Optimisation of claims processing time and cost.
A total of 112 submissions were received across five problem statements. An independent jury selected the top three teams for each category.
Stakeholders and Innovation Ecosystem
The event was organised with ecosystem partners including IRDAI, IIT Hyderabad, NRCeS, General Insurance Council, Google, Insurance Information Bureau, NABH, IIA and NATHealth. Participants included health-tech startups, insurers, TPAs, hospitals, HMIS vendors, students, academic institutions and developers. The wide participation reflected growing interest in standards-based digital health infrastructure.
Key Outcomes and Recognition
The Innovation Meet featured keynote addresses, panel discussions and technology demonstration stalls. The discussions covered standardisation in claims settlement, adoption of NHCX by hospitals and insurers, and the role of artificial intelligence in claims workflows. The National Health Authority also launched and recognised NHCX Champions, ABDM Ambassadors and early integrators of NHCX with PM-JAY systems. These recognitions are intended to accelerate adoption of interoperable digital claims systems across the health sector.
