NHAI Ends KYV for Car FASTags

NHAI Ends KYV for Car FASTags

National Highways Authority of India has decided to discontinue the Know Your Vehicle process for car, jeep and van category FASTags for all new issuances from 1 February 2026. The move is aimed at reducing inconvenience for highway users who faced delays and harassment after FASTag activation because of post-issuance verification requirements, even when valid vehicle documents were available.

KYV Requirement Relaxed

For existing FASTags issued to cars, KYV will no longer be a routine requirement. It will be sought only in specific complaint-based cases, such as loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or suspected misuse. In normal cases, users will not need to complete repeated verification after activation.

Upfront Validation Made Mandatory

NHAI has strengthened pre-activation checks for issuer banks. FASTag activation will now be allowed only after vehicle details are validated from the VAHAN database. The earlier system of validating after activation has been removed. If vehicle details are not available on VAHAN, banks must verify them through the Registration Certificate before activation.

Online FASTags Also Covered

FASTags sold through online channels will also require full validation before activation. The responsibility for accurate verification now rests entirely with issuer banks before the FASTag becomes active. This is intended to improve compliance, reduce customer grievances, and prevent misuse in the system.

Impact on Highway Users

The reform is expected to provide relief to lakhs of private vehicle owners by making the FASTag process simpler and more citizen-friendly. It also supports a more transparent and technology-driven toll collection ecosystem on National Highways, with fewer post-activation follow-ups and better accountability.
