The Ministry of Ayush has introduced a five-minute in-flight yoga routine to help air passengers remain fit, relaxed and energised during travel. The protocol was launched during Yoga Mahotsav 2026 and is designed to address health problems linked to long-duration flights, including stiffness, fatigue, poor circulation and stress. It has been developed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and can be performed while seated without any equipment.
Purpose of the initiative
The routine aims to make yoga accessible in aircraft cabins, where space is limited and movement is restricted. Long periods of sitting during flights can reduce blood flow and increase discomfort. In some cases, prolonged immobility may also raise the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis. The initiative promotes preventive healthcare through simple wellness practices.
Key components of the protocol
The five-minute routine combines light movement, breathing exercises and brief meditation. It includes:
- Short centring exercises for awareness.
- Gentle joint movements such as shoulder rotations and ankle stretches.
- Seated yoga postures, including spinal twists and modified stretches.
- Breathing techniques such as Anulom Vilom and Bhramari.
- A brief meditation for relaxation.
Health benefits for travellers
The ministry says the routine may improve blood circulation, reduce fatigue, ease anxiety and support adjustment to time zone changes. It is intended for use during flights of different durations and may help passengers manage the physical strain of sedentary travel. The emphasis is on simple, repeatable practices that can be followed consistently.
Broader wellness message
The initiative reflects a wider effort to integrate yoga into everyday life and promote behavioural change. Officials have brought into light that health improvement does not always require extra time or space. The routine is meant to encourage passengers to adopt small wellness habits even in confined travel conditions.
