The Ministry of Ayush has launched the 75-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga 2026 through Yoga Mahotsav-2026 in Lonar, Maharashtra. The event at Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj Udyan in Buldhana district drew nearly 5,000 participants, who performed Trikonasana together and set a record recognised by the Asia Book of Records. The programme marked the formal start of preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga.
Record Participation in Trikonasana
Nearly 5,000 people joined the mass Trikonasana demonstration, making it one of the largest collective yoga posture performances in Asia. The record brought into light yoga as a shared public activity and reflected the emphasis on Jan Bhagidari, or mass participation, in the lead-up to IDY 2026.
Focus on Holistic Health
Union Minister of State for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav described the event as a strong beginning to the countdown. He underlined yoga’s role in physical fitness, mental well-being, and emotional balance. He also referred to Ayush Aahara, promoting traditional nutrition through foods such as millets, ragi, coconut oil, and medicinal spices to support immunity.
Yoga Protocols and Campaigns
The event included a live demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol led by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. It also showcased initiatives such as Yoga for Air Travel, 10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases, and the Yoga 365 campaign for daily practice. A toll-free helpline offering 14 days of free guided yoga sessions was also brought into light.
Theme for IDY 2026
The upcoming International Day of Yoga 2026 is expected to focus on non-communicable diseases, geriatric health, and the possible integration of artificial intelligence with yoga practices. The Ministry aims to expand yoga as a global wellness movement through wider public engagement and regular practice.
