Lumpongdeng Island Excluded From Umiam Resort Project

Lumpongdeng Island Excluded From Umiam Resort Project

The Meghalaya government has withdrawn Lumpongdeng Island from the proposed luxury resort project at Umiam Lake after objections from local stakeholders. The decision came after a meeting between government officials and a delegation of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong of Ri Bhoi district. The move is aimed at addressing public concerns while allowing the main resort proposal to continue on the existing Orchid land near Umiam Lake.

Government Decision

The tourism department has stated that Lumpongdeng Island, spread over 36 acres, will be excluded from the concession agreement linked to the Taj Resort and Spa project. The agreement will be amended accordingly. Officials said the government had earlier maintained that no construction would take place on the island and that the plan was meant for experiential tourism only.

Resort Project Details

The proposed five-star luxury resort was planned in and around about 30 acres of land where the existing Umiam Orchid Lake Resort is located. The project is intended to attract investment and create employment opportunities for local youth. The government has said it wants private sector participation to expand tourism-linked jobs in the state.

Local Opposition and Stakeholder Concerns

The Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong raised concerns during discussions, leading to the withdrawal of the island from the project. A group under the Green Tech Foundation has also been staging a hunger strike demanding cancellation of the project. The government has said it is responding to public sentiment and has no hidden agenda in the tourism plan.
