Khongjom Day was observed at the Khongjom War Memorial in Khebaching, Thoubal district, Manipur, to honour the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. The day commemorates the sacrifice of Manipuri warriors who fought to defend the motherland. The observance was also held across the State and in places outside Manipur where Manipuris reside.
State-Level Ceremony
The main event was attended by the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, ministers, MLAs, senior civil and police officers, and members of the public. Floral wreaths were laid at the memorial, followed by Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, Last Post, two minutes’ silence, and other ceremonial rites.
Tributes to Paona Brajabashi
Wreaths were also placed at the statue of Paona Brajabashi, a prominent figure of the 1891 war. A gun salute was given in his honour. Tarpan was offered at the Khongjom River, and homage was paid through Sankirtana. These rituals reflected the cultural and historical significance of the day in Manipur’s collective memory.
Message on Unity and Responsibility
The Governor said Khongjom Day is a day of remembrance and reflection. He stressed unity, self-respect, and resilience in the face of challenges. He said the sacrifices of the forefathers show that freedom and peace must be protected with responsibility.
Chief Minister’s Appeal
The Chief Minister said Manipuris take pride in their identity because of the bravery shown during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. He also referred to public protests linked to the Tronglaobi incident and appealed to people not to take steps that could disrupt development works or deepen social hostility.
