Researchers at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) have identified a new marine tardigrade species in Mandapam, southeast Tamil Nadu, and named it “Batillipes Kalami” in tribute to the late former President and scientist, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. This discovery marks the second marine tardigrade found in Indian waters and the first from the east coast. It’s also the first taxonomically described species of the genus Batillipes in India, and the 37th in the genus. Batillipes Kalami measures around 0.17 mm in length and 0.05 mm in width, with a distinctive trapezoid-shaped head and filament-like appendages on it. Tardigrades are known for their resilience and are often referred to as “water bears.”
