BBBP’s Animal Adoption Programme Launched in Karnataka

The Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBBP), Karnataka, has launched the Animal Adoption Programme. This initiative comes during the pandemic lockdown period and aims to conserve wildlife while allowing people to adopt zoo animals. The programme not only involves adopting but also spending on the feeding and veterinary care of the chosen creature. As a reward, the government offers an Income Tax rebate under section 80G of the Indian IT Act.

Overview of the Animal Adoption Programme

BBBP has released a list of animals that can be adopted including, but not limited to, King cobra, Indian rock python, Black buck, Sambar, Emu, Golden jackal, Indian leopard, Sloth bear, Hippopotamus, Bengal tiger, Giraffe. The programme seeks to engage the public in the responsibility of the animals’ welfare. The initiative gives everyone a chance to take part in the preservation and care of wildlife within the city.

A Brief History of BBBP

BBBP has a rich history dating back to its establishment as part of the Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) in 2004. BNP itself was declared a national park in 1974. Later, BBBP was brought under the Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK). Over time, it has grown hugely and is now organized into four divisions: the zoo, the safari, the butterfly park, and the rescue centre.

Importance of BBBP

BBBP holds significant importance, being one of the few places globally with wilderness so close to a big city. It sits within the valley of Champakadhama hills, making it a natural habitat for several wildlife species. Its existence in such proximity to urbanisation presents a unique setting for biodiversity conservation.

Objectives of the BBBP

The BBBP plays an instrumental role in fulfilling several objectives. It strengthens national efforts in the ex-situ conservation of biodiversity, supporting the conservation of endangered species. It also provides opportunities for scientific studies, research, and documentation on conservation and creation databases. Additionally, it aims to bring awareness to the public about preserving biodiversity and provide recreational opportunities to visitors.

Flora and Fauna within BBBP

BBBP is home to a rich collection of flora and fauna. In terms of vegetation, it has dry deciduous forests (scrub type), southern tropical dry deciduous forests, and southern tropical moist mixed forests. The animal population boasts elephants, Chital, Barking Deer, Striped Hyena, Porcupine, Peafowl, Grey Jungle Fowl, Partridges, crocodiles, tortoises, pythons, a variety of butterflies, and many more.

The BBBP’s new initiative of the Animal Adoption Programme underlines its continuing commitment to wildlife preservation. Through this programme, not only can people contribute directly to the sustenance and care of a variety of animal species, but they can also benefit from a tax rebate. This blend of personal benefit and societal good makes this initiative quite appealing to the masses.
